Two weeks prior to the Bundesliga restart, the first official trophy of the new German season, the reinstated Supercup, is up for grabs in Augsburg on Saturday evening. Bayern meet Schalke in a re-run of last Sunday’s LIGA total! Cup final, a rapid re-match between the nation’s top two clubs.
“We’re all here to win trophies,” Holger Badstuber told fcbayern.de. “This isn’t perhaps a major trophy, but it’s still a trophy. It would be a good start to the season, and we want to take the opportunity on offer.” Badstuber’s sentiments were echoed by Mario Gomez. “It's a final, and Bayern Munich set out to win every final,” the striker declared.
Coach Louis van Gaal earlier gave his view of the situation. “The club wants to win everything it plays for, as do I as the coach. The Supercup is a clash between the two best teams, and I agree that Schalke and Bayern were the two best teams last season,” the Dutchman said. However, as he noted on Friday, the full FCB squad has only trained together once so far, “and that’s a lot less than Schalke.”
