Midweek tests for Champions League rivals

Like Bayern, two of Munich’s three Champions League group rivals have been in midweek action. On Wednesday, FC Basel entertained Grasshoppers Zurich, with AS Roma away to Brescia. Romanian outfit CFR Cluj had the week off.

Watched by FCB assistant coach Andries Jonker, Basel took on Grasshoppers, who beat Thorsten Fink’s men in three out of four meetings last term. Wednesday’s clash between teams coached by former Bayern team-mates - Ciriaco Sforza is in charge of the Zurich club – ended with honours even at 2-2.

The 28,274 crowd at St. Jakob-Park saw Basel fall behind after eight minutes to Paulo Menezes’ speculative effort. The home team turned the game on its head before the break, David Abraham (34) and Marco Streller (44) netting against the defensive visitors. However, Innocent Emeghara levelled on 51 minutes to seal his side a point.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed,” commented Fink, “we were in front, and it's a shame we couldn’t hang on.” In the Swiss Super League, Basel are two points off leaders Lucerne, who also have a game in hand.
