FC Basel warmed up in style for their Champions League clash against FC Bayern with a 4-1 win away to FC Zurich on Saturday. “We concentrated hard in defence, our build-up play was good, and we were efficient in front of goal. That’s exactly what we need on Tuesday,” commented coach Thorsten Fink.
The former Bayern pro, who took the reins in Basel last season, saw his side silence the 12,700 crowd at the Letzigrund stadium with a fine performance – and this despite having two men sent off. “All credit to my team,” Fink said afterwards, “we were professional throughout, even after the red cards, and deserved the win. It was a very mature performance, and a good reaction to some less than positive recent results.”
Ahead of the trip to rivals Zurich, last term’s Swiss double winners had taken just six points from their previous six league fixtures, but Fink’s men made light of a torrential downpour and always looked the likely winners. Samuel Inkoom (10), Marco Streller (44, 67) and Valentin Stocker (46) capitalised on some calamitous home defending to net for the visitors.
