It wasn’t a momentous corner-turning victory to match last term’s 4-1 win against Juventus, but Tuesday night’s 2-1 success away to FC Basel still left the Bayern camp in good spirits. The German double winners are exceptionally well-placed after winning their first two Champions League Group E fixtures, and will now return to the bread-and-butter of the Bundesliga with a great deal more optimism and levity.
“That was an important step in the right direction,” chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge declared at the traditional post-match banquet, held in the Salon des Nations at the team’s central Basel hotel. “Today’s victory will be a small boost to our confidence,” continued Rummenigge, looking ahead to Sunday’s challenging trip to face Borussia Dortmund. “The aim must be to score points, to help us settle the situation and start moving up the table.”
