Friday was an evening of firsts at the Allianz Arena. The first first came on 39 minutes, when Martin Demichelis headed his side into the lead. It was the defender’s first start of the season, and his first goal too. After a tricky opening spell, the goal set the champions on their way to a fully merited 4-2 victory over Freiburg. Whether Bayern will now rediscover peak form remains to be seen, but aspects of Friday’s display certainly gave cause for optimism.
“It's a start,” said Louis van Gaal following a second convincing league victory in a row, and the continuation of a run which has brought four wins and a draw in all competitions. “I think our confidence is increasing,” continued the boss, “I’m a happy coach. I’m very satisfied with the result. We’ve won, and by a two-goal margin too, which hasn’t often happened this season. And we’ve scored four goals, that’s a first as well.”
