Between them, Zé Roberto, Paolo Guerrero, Piotr Trochowski, Marcell Jansen and David Jarolim made a total of 227 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern, scoring 25 league goals and collecting 20 league and cup winner’s medals. On Friday, the five will be doing their utmost to frustrate their former team-mates in Hamburg colours
“They’ll be specially fired up,” said Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played alongside four of the five in Munich’s youth and senior teams. The one exception is Jarolim, who made his top flight debut for FCB in April 1999 but never appeared for the club again.
Schweinsteiger is most familiar with Zé Roberto. The 26-year-old had spells in Munich from 2002-6 and 2007-9 and appeared in 169 Bundesliga fixtures for Bayern. After Zé Roberto’s switch to HSV 15 moths ago, Schweinsteiger took over the Brazilian’s position alongside Mark van Bommel in the holding role.
“I always got along with him well and I’m looking forward to seeing him again,” noted Schweinsteiger, “and I have to play against him, which is tough, because he’s a great player. But you have to be hard about these things for 90 minutes.” The midfielder praised Zé Roberto’s skill, dribbling, pace, and set-piece delivery. “He has so many qualities, and he’s an important player for Hamburg.”
