Bastian Schweinsteiger has become the latest Bayern player forced to the sidelines with injury, joining a list already featuring the names of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, Diego Contento, Hamit Altintop, Breno and David Alaba. In Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund, Schweinsteiger sustained damage to the ligaments in his instep – technically an incipient capsular tear in the tarsal area – and has pulled out of Germany’s EURO 2012 qualifiers at home to Turkey on Friday and away to Kazakhstan the following Tuesday.
Schweinsteiger called Germany boss Joachim Löw on Monday afternoon to pass on the news. The diagnosis was made by Bayern and Germany chief medic Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt following an MRI scan in Munich. The injury occurred when the midfielder turned his right foot during the match in Dortmund, leaving him in some pain afterwards.
The likely length of Schweinsteiger’s lay-off has yet to be determined.
