In their third Euro 2012 qualifier, Belgium and Daniel van Buyten finally earned their first points of the campaign on Friday night. The Red Devils won 2-0 away to Kazakhstan in Astana and are now fourth in Group A, currently led by Germany. The Kazakhs, who host the leaders on Tuesday, remain bottom of the section on no points.
Van Buyten completed the 90 minutes for the dominant visitors. Marvin Ogunjimi marked his maiden full international appearance with a second-half brace, twice netting after fumbles by home keeper Andrei Sidelnikov. The Kazakhs also lost Alexander Kislizyn to a second bookable offence midway through the second half. The defender will now be suspended on Tuesday.
In Group E, the Netherlands and their captain Mark van Bommel are now top with maximum points from their three matches, although Bert van Marwijk’s men made heavy weather of their trip to Moldova. Van Bommel covered the full distance in a fully deserved but tight 1-0 victory, Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netting the only goal after 37 minutes.
