Bayern open preparations for Schalke trip

After two rest days, the senior squad reported back to the Säbener Strasse on Wednesday morning to commence preparations for Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to face Schalke 04. Snow was falling and temperatures were well below zero as Louis van Gaal supervised a group numbering 20 players, with Miroslav Klose returning to the practice ground for the first time since rupturing a hamstring three weeks ago.

On the day after the club’s successful AGM, Philipp Lahm believes the players now have a duty to step up the chase for a Champions League qualifying place in the league, ideally by securing a maximum return from the remaining three league fixtures prior to the mid-season break. “We as a team really have to go for it now,” Lahm said ahead of Wednesday’s workout at the Säbener Strasse.

Heading in the right direction

Bayern currently lie 14 points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund, “so winning the title is no longer in our own hands,” acknowledged Lahm, although the full-back said he had “no concerns” regarding Champions League qualification. “We’re right up close to the Champions League places, and I’m convinced by the potential we have in the team here.”
