Bayern will face one of Inter Milan, AC Milan, Arsenal, Valencia, Olympique Lyon, Olympique Marseille or FC Copenhagen in the Champions League Round of 16. Group E winners Munich will be paired with one of the teams which finished runners-up in their section when the draw for the first knockout round is made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on 17 December.
“They’re all good teams. We just have to wait and see,” commented Louis van Gaal following his side’s 3-0 win over FC Basel in their final group fixture. “It really doesn’t matter,” said Mario Gomez, “playing a good team isn’t necessarily a disadvantage. Everyone is 110 percent motivated and focused,” continued the striker, recalling Bayern’s triumphs against the likes of Manchester United and Lyon last season.
Top European clubs
Although FCB avoid the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid and United by finishing top of their group, the list of runners-up is, as usual, hardly less daunting. Take Champions League holders and Italian champions Inter: a tie against the Nerrazzuri would be a re-run of last term’s final. AC Milan are a bogey team in Munich, as FCB have never progressed at the north Italian club’s expense in the knockout stages. Arsenal currently lead the English Premier League, Valencia rate as one of the top contenders in Spain, and Olympique Marseille are Franck Ribéry’s former club.
Regardless of the identity of the opposition, Bayern will definitely play the first leg away from home in mid-February, with the all-important return at the Allianz Arena in early March.
