Bayern's reward for defeating VfB Stuttgart 6-3 at the Mercedes Benz Arena in the DFB Cup Round of 16 thriller on Wednesday night is another away tie, this time in the far west of Germany against second division Alemannia Aachen.
Despite the gulf in class on paper, the cup holders will be wary of Aachen, who beat Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties to reach the last eight, and have previously knocked FCB out of the cup at their home Tivoli stadium on two occasions: in February 2004, FCB fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals, while a little short of three years later, the men in yellow and black won 4-2 in the last sixteen. Aachen also emerged victorious from the last Bundesliga meeting between the sides with the only goal of the game in February 2007.
The quarter final clash will be played on 25 or 26 January next year. This year's DFB Cup final at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin rounds off the domestic season on 21 May.
