Bayern’s worst fears were confirmed on Saturday when Daniel van Buyten was diagnosed with a fracture of the second metatarsal in his left foot, an injury sustained in Friday’s 3-1 defeat away to Mönchengladbach. FCB chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt issued the diagnosis after examining the player on the squad’s return to Munich on Saturday.

Professor Andreas B. Imhoff will perform corrective surgery at Munich University Hospital later in the day. Van Buyten, who has made 21 appearances and performed strongly so far this season, will be out of action for an as yet undefined period. “We can’t make a credible estimate of the length of his lay-off until after the operation,” Dr Müller-Wohlfahrt informed

In the 76th minute of Friday’s Bundesliga restart fixture at Borussia Park, Van Buyten collided unluckily with Mönchengladbach striker Marco Reus and had to be supported from the pitch. The Belgian international left the ground on crutches.
