Despite it all, the Bayern stars have not fallen out of love with football. On Tuesday afternoon, the squad gathered for the first time since the Champions League final for a light workout at the Säbener Strasse, simultaneously the final training session of the current season. And hearteningly enough, there were a few smiles to be seen out on the training ground.
Gags passed to and fro during the warm-up and games of five against two, with Thomas Müller, Holger Badstuber and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk staying out on the pitch after the end of the session for a fun game of scoring from impossible angles. Some 300 spectators were then treated to an autograph signing session, with Franck Ribéry showing extreme durability. The Frenchman, substituted on Saturday evening with cramp, completed the training session and fulfilled practically every spectator's wish.
Jörg's last training session
The session marking the end of the season at club headquarters lasted around 45 minutes. Coach Jupp Heynckes supervised a group of 20 players. Diego Contento, who came away from the Champions League final with a sprain, went jogging on an adjacent pitch, where he was joined by long-term injury victim Breno. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Daniel van Buyten also picked up minor injuries on Saturday, and were both restricted to treatment and work in the weights room.
Ivica Olic, Danijel Pranjic, Takashi Usami, Rouven Sattelmaier and Breno all took part in their final workouts at Bayern, while the session was the last of his long professional career for Jörg Butt. The club will officially bid farewell to the six players prior to the evening friendly against the Netherlands at the Allianz Arena.
Holidays or Euro 2012
Once tonight's game is done, the squad is officially released for the summer. A proportion of the players will head straight off on vacation, with the rest joining up with their national teams in advance of Euro 2012. Regardless of when the stars finally take their holidays, each has an individual regeneration and training plan for the close season. Heynckes has ordered his men to report back for the new season on 3 July, with the first of the Euro 2012 hopefuls expected back at the Säbener Strasse a week later at the earliest.
