It’s clear that the summer break has done Jupp Heynckes the world of good. The head coach was beaming and upbeat for Tuesday’s training restart, and happily answered every reporters’ question at the first press conference of the new term on Wednesday. “I have the power, the desire and the energy to focus totally on the new season,” reported the 67-year-old, who has put the disappointing end to the previous campaign behind him, but has not wiped away three runners-up spots from his mind. Quite the opposite: Heynckes has drawn vital conclusions.
“We need to be more clever, robust, and geared up for success. This is what we lacked at the decisive moments,” said the coach, “we need to rediscover our hunger to develop, and our hunger for success.” The players should concentrate exclusively on “fitness, training, matches and their lifestyles,” he continued. “I’ll be demanding much more of this in the new season.”
