Javi’s first priority is settling in, says Henckes

Javi Martinez is itching to get started as a Bayern player, but boss Jupp Heynckes insists it is “not important" whether the star signing is a member of the squad for Sunday's meeting with Stuttgart. “Nor does it matter whether he plays for a couple of minutes," the coach told reporters at the player’s unveiling on Thursday, “the important thing is for him to get to know the club and start settling in."

The defensive midfielder has been through turbulent times in recent weeks, continued Heynckes, due to the complex nature of the transfer which ultimately came to a successful conclusion on Wednesday. The 23-year-old is also coming off the back of a punishing season with Athletic Bilbao, and the European championship and Olympic Football Tournament with Spain. “It's clear he needs to calm down first, before settling in bit by bit," the coach declared.
