Bayern have been handed a manageable but still tricky pre-Christmas tie in the last sixteen of this season’s DFB Cup. The Bundesliga leaders, who are also the most successful club in cup history, will travel the short distance to FC Augsburg in search of a quarter-final berth. Sunday evening’s draw, broadcast live on national television, was made by DFB director of sport Robin Dutt and Germany women’s international Saskia Bartusiak.
The Round of 16 is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday 18 and 19 December 2012. In an ironic twist, the teams meet on the same ground just a week and a half earlier on 8 December, as Bayern’s penultimate fixture in the first half of the Bundesliga season also takes place at Augsburg's SGL arena.
The game will be only the second between Augsburg and FCB in the national cup competition. The previous meeting took place in the second round back in 1983/84, with the men from the Bavarian capital cruising to a 6-0 victory in Augsburg. Munich went on to claim the sixth of their 15 cup triumphs that season.
