One of Real Madrid, AC Milan, Arsenal, Shakhtar Donetsk, Porto, Celtic or Galatasaray will provide Bayern’s opposition in the Champions League first knockout round. The draw for the last sixteen in Europe’s elite club competition takes place at 11.30 am CET on Thursday 20 December at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
As group winners, Bayern cannot be drawn against fellow table-toppers Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris St. Germain, Juventus, Malaga, Schalke and Dortmund. The Champions League regulations stipulate that group winners meant one of the runners-up in the first knockout round.

Furthermore, reasoned Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, FCB enjoy the “minor tactical advantage” of playing the decisive second leg on their home turf. “If you look at the runners-up, you can see it could be a plus,” commented Jupp Heynckes.
“It starts for real in the last sixteen. You can’t have a single off day,” warned Rummenigge. The first leg ties in the Round of 16 take place between 12 and 20 February next year, with the return fixtures between 5 and 13 March.
