Fifteen-time DFB Cup winners Bayern will play holders Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena in comfortably the biggest clash of the quarter-finals in this season’s competition. That was the outcome of the draw for the last eight, made by former Germany international and FCB forward Olaf Thon live on national TV following the completion of the Round of 16 on Wednesday evening.
“I’m always very happy to play Bayern, but obviously I’d rather we were at home. OK, so we have to do it in Munich now,” commented Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke in an initial reaction to the draw.
FCB and BVB most recently crossed swords in the cup last season, but the occasion is replete with unhappy memories for Munich as the Ruhr Valley outfit won the 2011/12 final 5-2 to complete a domestic double. However, this season’s quarter-finals now offer Bayern the chance of a measure of revenge.
The last eight tie in February next year will be the sixth DFB Cup clash between Bayern and Dortmund. Of the five previous meetings, FCB have won three and Borussia two. Unfortunately for the men from Munich, Franck Ribéry will miss cup clash number six after his dismissal in Augsburg on Tuesday night for retaliation.
The quarter-final ties will be played on 26 and 27 February next year.
