Chairman: We must sustain the positive tension

Relief was the Bayern players’ initial reaction to the final whistle in Leverkusen on Saturday. Bastian Schweinsteiger gathered his team-mates into a huddle – and then the celebrations started, wiping away the memory of defeat in the reverse fixture, still FCB’s only Bundesliga loss this term, and the upset against Arsenal three days earlier. The 2-1 win away to Bayer was important, and also brought the league title another step closer.

FCB need a maximum of five points from the remaining eight games to wrap up the championship, and could even seal the crown in the first match after the international break, the Easter Saturday meeting with Hamburg. However, Matthias Sammer described the game of permutations as “totally meaningless. We know we have a 20-point lead. But given the targets we’ve set ourselves, we also know there are things we have to do better.”
