FCB open new campaign against Gladbach

The new Bundesliga campaign starts the way the previous one ended for Bayern with a clash against old rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach. The champions and treble winners officially open the 51st Bundesliga season at home to the Lower Rhine outfit on Friday 9 August, as revealed in the new fixture list announced by German Football League (DFL) managing director Andreas Rettig on Friday.

It will be the fifth time in the last 13 seasons that Bayern have played the first league fixture of the season against Mönchengladbach. The Reds lost 1-0 in 2001, the 2002 clash was a goalless draw, FCB triumphed 3-0 in 2005, and lost 1-0 in 2011. On the second matchday of the new season, head coach Pep Guardiola's men travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt, before the all-Bavaria derby against FC Nürnberg at the Allianz Arena on 23 to 25 August.

Two rearranged games

With Bayern slated to contest the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea in Prague on 30 August, the fourth league fixture has been brought forward to Tuesday 27 August, when the treble winners visit SC Freiburg. The 17th and last match before the mid-season break will also be rearranged, as FCB will be in Morocco at this time for the FIFA Club World Cup. The away fixture against cup final opponents VfB Stuttgart will be put back into 2014, on either 28 or 29 January.

The first match of the second half of the season, the reverse fixture against Mönchengladbach, takes place on the previous weekend (24 to 26 January). Bayern's final league game of the season is the home meeting with Stuttgart on 11 May.

Other highlights of the fixture plan include:

  • The meetings with runners up Dortmund, scheduled for the 13th and 30th matchdays: 22 to 24 November in Dortmund, and 11 to 13 April in Munich
  • The derbies against FC Augsburg on matchdays 12 and 29: the Allianz Arena clash on 8 to 10 November, with the reverse fixture on 4 to 6 April
  • The first promoted club due in Munich are Hertha Berlin on Matchday 10 (25 to 27 October), with the return at Berlin Olympic Stadium in the 27th round of matches, a midweek matchday on 25 and 26 March at 8 pm
  • The second promoted club, Eintracht Braunschweig, visit the Allianz Arena on Matchday 14 (29 November to 1 December), with the return on Matchday 31 (17 to 20 April)

At the present time, the only finalised fixtures on the schedule are the season opener on 9 August at 8.30 pm, and the last two matches, on 3 and 10 May at 3.30 pm. As always, all other games are definitively scheduled in the course of the season, taking into account DFB Cup and European commitments.
