Bundesliga opponents in cup second round

Bayern have been handed an interesting but manageable home tie against Bundesliga rivals Hannover 96 in this season’s DFB Cup second round. In Saturday evening’s draw, made on Pay TV by Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff and Wolfsburg’s treble winner Lena Goeßling, a newly-crowned women’s European champion, 16-time cup winners FCB were 19th out of the hat and were awarded home advantage against the Lower Saxony side.

The second round tie will be played on 24 or 25 September. In a curious coincidence, the rivals will meet ten or 11 days earlier in the Bundesliga on 14 September, also in Munich. A total of 32 teams made it into the draw for the DFB Cup second round, 14 from the Bundesliga, 13 from Bundesliga 2 and four from the third division. The last remaining fourth-tier club in the cup are SC Wiedenbrück 2000, whose reward was a less-then-plum tie at home to second division Sandhausen.

Overwhelming at home to Hannover

Bayern and Hannover 96 have crossed swords in the domestic knockout cup on two previous occasions. In 2002/03, holders FCB recorded a narrow 2-1 victory in the second round thanks to goals at the Olympic stadium from Hasan Salihamidzic and Roque Santa Cruz. The previous meeting was way back in 1974, when a Gerd Müller hat-trick saw Bayern into the semi-finals by a 3-2 scoreline.

Overall, the men from Lower Saxony have struggled in the Bavarian capital, with just one win in their Bundesliga history, a 1-0 triumph on 8 November 2006. Otherwise, of the 24 matches in Munich, FCB have won 21, with two draws. Bayern have won their last six home meetings with Hannover, scoring 25 goals and conceding only two. The treble winners cruised to a 5-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last term.
