The Bayern stars are on their way to Prague for the UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea. The club's Lufthansa charter jet took off from Munich around 20 minutes late at just past 11 o'clock on Thursday morning for the flight to the Czech capital, where last season's Champions League and Europa League winners meet in the prestige duel at Eden Arena.
“We're looking forward to the match and we’ll do everything we can to win it," said keeper Manuel Neuer shortly before takeoff. The 19-strong Bayern party includes Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez, although both are carrying minor injuries. Franck Ribéry was not among the travelling group, as he is on his way to Monaco for the UEFA Best Player in Europe award ceremony in the early evening.
“I'm really wishing him the very best of luck. He’s the outstanding player in Europe at the moment," declared FCB president Uli Hoeneß. Ribéry is bidding to be the first Munich man to follow in the footsteps of current chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who won the European Footballer of the Year award in 1980 and 1981.
Hoeneß was also upbeat about the Reds’ chances in the meeting with West London outfit Chelsea. “We won the Champions League by a distance last year. We were the best team in Europe," stated Hoeneß. However, despite the bitter defeat to the Blues in Munich in the 2012 Champions League final, the club president said there was “no thirst for revenge." Arjen Robben, scorer of the winning goal against Dortmund at Wembley last May, is looking forward to the reunion with his former club: “We're ready and we needn’t hold back."
Immediately after their arrival in Prague, the FCB delegation will transfer to the team hotel in the city centre. At 4.30 pm CET, coach Pep Guardiola, captain Philipp Lahm and striker Thomas Müller will appear at the official pre-match press conference, before the squad trains at the 21,000 capacity Eden Arena in the early evening. Kick-off on Friday is at 8.45 pm CET.
