‘Now we want to bring home the trophy’

Bayern made short work of the first hurdle on the way to a fifth trophy in 2013 with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Guangzhou Evergrande in Agadir on Tuesday night, sending the men from Munich through to Saturday’s FIFA Club World Cup final. The mood in the FCB camp was understandably upbeat afterwards. “We were utterly determined to make the final,” commented club captain Philipp Lahm, “now we want to bring home the trophy.“

Reaction to Guangzhou v Bayern

Pep Guardiola: “Congratulations to my team. They deserve their place in the final. We took it very seriously against a team with quick wide men. We had most of the possession, allowing us to control the game and create plenty of chances. But for all that it wasn’t easy. Marcello Lippi is one of the coaching greats.“

Philipp Lahm: “We said we would need the bulk of the possession against this team with their good counter-attacking players. We needed a relatively long time before the opening goal, but overall we were composed and focused. That’s the way we wanted it beforehand. This is a very special tournament and we were utterly determined to make the final. Now we want to bring home the trophy. That’s what we’ve come here to do. It would mean we can go into the winter break with a good conscience.“

Franck Ribéry: “We played well and we treated the game seriously at all times. We’re professionals and we want to win the trophy here in Morocco. It matters, which is why we played the way we did today.”

Marcello Lippi (Guangzhou Evergrande coach): “The difference between the strongest team in the world and the rest was obvious today. Bayern Munich always dominate their matches. We had nothing to offer in response to their superiority today. We were clearly inferior. But I can’t criticise my team for a decent performance. Appearing in the semi-finals at the Club World Cup is unimaginable after only a year and a half’s work.”
