Bayern to face Guangzhou at Club World Cup

Guangzhou Evergrande are Bayern’s opponents in next Tuesday’s FIFA Club World Cup semi-final. The Chinese champions and Asian Champions League winners defeated African representatives Al Ahly of Cairo 2-0 in Saturday evening’s quarter-final. Brazilian striker Elkeson (49) and Argentine Dario Conca (67) scored in Agadir for the team coached by Italian World Cup winner Marcello Lippi. In the other quarter-final, Moroccan outfit Raja Casablanca defeated Mexican representatives Monterrey 2–1 after extra-time. Casablanca now meet Brazilian Copa Libertadores winners Atletico Mineiro in Wednesday’s second semi-final in Marrakech.

Bundesliga stronghold Allianz Arena

Bayern equalled another record on Saturday by completing a 17th Bundesliga home win out of 17 in the year 2013. The feat has been previously achieved only by earlier FCB generations in 1972 and 2005. The last time the treble winners failed to win at home in the league was a 1-1 draw with Gladbach on 14 December 2012. However, there is some way to go if FCB are to post a new record for consecutive home wins: between Matchday 16 in 1971/72 and Matchday 32 in 1972/73 Bayern won an extraordinary 26 Bundesliga home fixtures in a row.

Pursuit of records continues

Saturday’s victory over Hamburg means Bayern have extended their record league points haul in 2013. No team has ever posted 93 points in a calendar year before. A total of 44 points from the first 16 league matches is also a new record. Last but not least, Pep Guardiola is the first coach to oversee his first 16 league matches without defeat.

Müller’s milestone, Hojbjerg’s debut

Thomas Müller made his 150th Bundesliga appearance on Saturday. Appropriately enough it was against HSV, who were also Bayern’s opponents on 15 August 2008 when the Germany international made his debut: Müller came on as a substitute for Miroslav Klose in a match that ended 2–2. Thomas is now up to 52 goals in the German top flight. Saturday also saw youngster Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg make his first league appearance of the season. The Dane, who provided the assist for Xherdan Shaqiri’s stoppage-time goal in FCB’s 3-1 win, now has three Bundesliga matches under his belt.
