Reaction to Bayern v Bayer

‘We have to keep our focus’

Bayern moved another step closer to retaining their Bundesliga title with Saturday evening’s 2-1 victory over Leverkusen. “It’s not important when we win it,” declared Pep Guardiola, “it’s important we maintain our positive tension. We need to stay focused and keep our concentration for the next two to three months.“ Thomas Müller felt FCB had dominated the meeting with Bayer: “We controlled the match from start to finish and made very few defensive mistakes, although we just lacked a little flair in front of goal.“

Reaction to Bayern v Bayer

Pep Guardiola: “Beating Leverkusen isn’t easy. We didn’t play well in the first half, we gave the ball away a lot and we were lucky too. Our attacking moves were better after half-time. We’re pleased with the match. We need another game or two before definitely retaining our title. It’s not important when we win it. It’s important we maintain our positive tension. We need to stay focused and keep our concentration for the next two to three months.“

Bastian Schweinsteiger: “It was an important goal because it put the lid on the situation. I’m delighted it went in. I’m just trying to do my job and build up the fitness you need to put in top performances at the top level. We’ve won the title in Mainz before now. It would be great because the Mainz fans celebrated with us last time. But basically it doesn’t matter when.“

Thomas Müller: “We controlled the match from start to finish and made very few defensive mistakes, although we just lacked a little flair in front of goal. Leverkusen pulled everyone back and it made us a little dozy. We didn’t quite push it to the limit today, but it might have been the fault of the overall situation what with all the upheaval and the events of the last few weeks and days.“

Sami Hyypiä (Leverkusen coach): “You’re never happy after a defeat. Bayern showed all their quality, but we had the chance to open the scoring at the start. We were unlucky to fall behind just before half-time. Schweinsteiger’s free-kick was magnificent, there was nothing we could do about it. We began to look tired in the second half.“

Heung Min-Son (Leverkusen): “We got into the game in the first half and did everything we could not to concede an early goal. But we went 1-0 down right at the end of the first half. That shouldn’t be happening.”
