Bayern’s 2-0 victory away to FSV Mainz was the Reds’ 24th in 26 Bundesliga fixtures this season and their 18th in succession. The mood in the treble winners’ camp after the final whistle was understandably upbeat. “I’m just pleased about winning today against one of the toughest teams we’ll face this season,” commented Pep Guardiola after a hard-earned triumph at the Coface Arena.
Reaction to Mainz v Bayern
Pep Guardiola: “We’ve played very good opponents and we’ve won. We’ve extended our record to 18 wins on the trot. That's the result of a lot of hard work. I’m just pleased about winning today against one of the toughest teams we’ll face this season. We only need one more win now. It’s in our own hands. We can be champions in the capital on Tuesday.“
Bastian Schweinsteiger: “You always have to work hard for victory here in Mainz. They’re very aggressive and they press high up the field. The first half wasn’t easy, but they were tired towards the end. We’re not really concerned about when we win the title. We want to maintain our rhythm. The second half was pretty good.“
Jérôme Boateng: “The important thing is that we’ve won and taken another step towards the championship. It's wonderful that we could win the league in Berlin, which is where it all started for me. We’ve prepared the way for it today.“
Thomas Tuchel (FSV Mainz coach): “I think every spectator sensed we put our hearts into it today. We played with conviction and a huge amount of effort. From our point of view, we could have earned a reward by scoring the opening goal. There’s not a lot to criticise today.“
