Bundesliga champions Bayern will open their defence of the domestic crown at home to VfL Wolfsburg, according to the fixture schedule for the 2014/15 season released by the German Football League (DFL) in Frankfurt am Main on Tuesday. The official opening match, which has featured the reigning champions at home since 2002/03, kicks off at 8.30 pm CET on Friday 22 August.

“I’m delighted we start the Bundesliga campaign with a highly attractive match against strong opponents. The fact we face a leading team will sharpen our senses for the new season form the first day of training onwards,“ FCB board member for sport Matthias Sammer exclusively told Toni Kroos was a shade more cautious: “As we saw last season, Wolfsburg have moved up another level, so it won’t be an easy match.“

The champions and most successful team in league history go on the road for the first time in the new Bundesliga season on Matchday 2 with the away trip to Schalke 04, before Bayern welcome southern rivals VfB Stuttgart to the Allianz Arena on Matchday 3. The latest league edition of the ‘German Clasico’ against Borussia Dortmund takes place in Munich on Matchday 10. The 34th and final Matchday sees Guardiola and his team play at home to FSV Mainz. The DFL will release precise scheduling details for the early league fixtures towards the end of next week.
