“Bayern versus Manchester United, Germany against England – it’ll be a real treat for the fans,” FC Bayern All-Stars captain Paul Breitner promised in the build-up to the meeting with the Manchester United Legends, the final highlight of Satruday’s Allianz FC Bayern Team Presentation – and the veterans’ clash lived up to its billing. The star-studded sides drew 3-3 with the goals scored by Paulo Sérgio, Giovane Elber, Alexander Zickler, Andy Cole (2) and Paul Scholes.
A host of former world-class players came out of retirement for the game, lured by the prospect of another appearance in front of a crowd in excess of 60,000. The visitors were the livelier at the start and Cole, scorer of 187 Premier League goals in his day, drove past FCB keeper Jörg Butt to hand United the lead after nine minutes. But the All-Stars fought back and Sergio levelled on 11 minutes before fellow 2001 Champions League winner Elber made it 2-1 to FCB with 21 minutes on the clock.
United legend Scholes made more than 700 appearances for the Red Devils and rolled back the years to equalise after 26 minutes, but Zickler showed he still has plenty of pace when he restored the All-Stars’ advantage seven minutes from half-time. Bayern looked as though they might hang on through to the end, but Cole was on hand in the 83rd minute to make it a deserved draw with the sixth goal of the game. Breitner, Olaf Thon, Hans Pflügler and Co may be a little older nowadays but as the delighted Allianz Arena crowd witnessed, they remain very accomplished footballers.
