‘Big Dan’ van Buyten bows out

Long-serving defender Daniel van Buyten has ended his distinguished playing career. “It’s often hard to take the big decisions,” the 36-year-old commented. The Belgium international is now looking forward to a new chapter in his life. “I want to spend more time with my wife, my kids and the people I love,” the man nicknamed ‘Big Dan’ said. Van Buyten played in Munich from 2006 until this summer when his contract expired. FC Bayern says ‘thank you’ for eight fantastic years! Van Buyten won the Champions League with FCB in 2013 and the Bundesliga and DFB Cup four times each.

World Cup stars work on public holiday

It was the Assumption holiday in Munich on Friday but a large number of Bayern players still came in for work, despite Pep Guardiola not scheduling a training session two days prior to the DFB Cup first round trip to Preußen Münster. World champions Philipp Lahm, Thomas Müller, Mario Götze and Jérôme Boateng were joined by Arjen Robben, Dante, Claudio Pizarro and Xherdan Shaqiri for a session of running at the Säbener Strasse facility. Franck Ribéry also returned after a spell off with a knee injury. The Frenchman completed an individual programme with fitness coach Dr Holger Broich and sports rehab specialist Thomas Wilhelmi.
