There were a few regrets in the Bayern camp after the 1-1 draw away to Schalke on Bundesliga Matchday 2. “I’m just angry we’ve only come away with one point,” a disappointed Thomas Müller said after a match in which FCB were superb in the early exchanges. “I think the first 20 to 25 minutes were outstanding,” reflected Pep Guardiola. “But at this stage of the season it’s not possible to play the way we did for the first 25 minutes over the full 90,” keeper Manuel Neuer pointed out.
Reaction to Schalke v Bayern:
Pep Guardiola: “The first 25 or 30 minutes were our best in the last six months. After that we no longer controlled possession, so we no longer had a grip on the game. But we ran hard so it was good training and a good test for our legs. We have two weeks without a game now and I hope most of our injured players can resume training.”
Manuel Neuer: “At this stage of the season it’s not possible to play the way we did for the first 25 minutes over the full 90. But 25 good minutes aren’t enough, as we’ve all seen today, and that’s why it’s finished 1-1.”
Thomas Müller: “It was hard-fought. Schalke resisted really well and we didn’t create anything clear-cut after the first 20 minutes. I’m not happy about drawing 1-1 here. I’m just angry we’ve only come away with one point. I’m really not delighted about that.”
Jens Keller (Schalke coach): “We never got going at the start, but the team’s reaction was unbelievable: they were determined, willing and hard-running, and our strikers worked hard when we weren’t in possession. It needs to be like that every week.”
Julian Draxler (Schalke): “We were asleep at the start but fought our way back into it. We deserved the point, and for us it’s definitely a point gained.”
