Reaction to FCB v City

Jerome: You feel pure joy

Bayern made a successful start to the Champions League season on Wednesday with a victory over Manchester City courtesy of Jérôme Boateng’s last-minute winner. “I’m delighted. We were much better tonight at a very high level. We deserved to win,” said coach Pep Guardiola. Captain Philipp Lahm agreed: “We wanted to open with a win, although it’s obviously lucky when the winning goal comes so late.”

Reaction to FCB v City

Pep Guardiola: ”It’s a very tough group. Just look at how Roma got on. I’m delighted. We were much better tonight at a very high level. We deserved to win. We had problems controlling the game at the start, especially in midfield, but we improved after that. I’m very happy and it was all very positive.”

Philipp Lahm: ”We had some huge chances in the first half, and we had the better chances over the full 90 minutes. It was a bit difficult to start with because Manchester saw a lot of the ball and we were chasing shadows. But we switched things around and it was a lot better. We’ve played one of the best teams around and they’re very dangerous. You don’t win matches like that just by turning up. We worked hard and we’re pleased with the win. We wanted to open with a win, although it’s obviously lucky when the winning goal comes so late.”

Jérôme Boateng: ”We had lots of chances but failed to take them. We believed we could do it right to the end. The ball sat up just right for me so I thought I’d just let fly and I hit it brilliantly. I’m delighted for the team because we made it. It’s just fantastic. We deserved to win although City played well. We basically shut them out but it was very hard work. It was the first match in front of our home crowd and we were determined to win. It wasn’t all good, but we gave it everything right to the end and we were rewarded.”

Thomas Müller: ”It was hard work and that was no surprise. We know them well from the past and all the games have been tight. They have so much quality. At the end of the day we can be very happy with the 1-0 win, although we should obviously have taken the lead much earlier.”

Ruben Cousillas (Manchester City assistant coach): ”We played very well but right at the end, when it was basically all over, we conceded the goal and that’s made us all very down. There are five games to go and we’re not throwing in the towel yet because we can still win the group. It’s entirely up to us.”

Joe Hart (Manchester City): “The home team always has a bit of an advantage. We never managed to apply enough pressure. We came close but at the end of the day Jérôme came up with an excellent goal.”
