Bayern have been handed an intriguing but manageable tie at home to second division Eintracht Braunschweig in the last sixteen of this season’s DFB Cup competition. The draw for the third round was made live on national TV at midnight on Wednesday by HSV legend Horst Hrubesch and TV presenter Judith Rakers following the second round ties, including Bayern’s 3-1 victory in Hamburg and Brauschweig’s 1-0 win away to fourth-tier Würzburg.
FCB will certainly not underestimate their lower league opponents, as Eintracht made a decent fist of their season back in the Bundesliga in 2013/14 and currently lie tenth in the German second tier. However, the overall record in the fixture clearly favours the Bavarians, who have won 25 of the 43 meetings, with 12 draws and six Braunschweig victories. FCB prevailed 2-0 in both Bundesliga meetings last term, and also won the most recent cup clash between the pair by a 3-0 scoreline back in August 2011.
Overall, nine of the Bundesliga’s 18 clubs have already been eliminated from this season’s competition, the highest number at this early stage since 1993. The last sixteen ties will be played on 3 and 4 March 2015, with the final at Berlin Olympic Stadium on 30 May next year.
