Roundup: Mixed fortunes for Alaba and Shaqiri

Four FC Bayern players were on international duty on Thursday - with differing results. It was a successful night for David Alaba and Austria as they secured a 2-1 win in Moldova en route to the Euro 2016 finals. The Bayern live wire put his team ahead from the penalty spot on 12 minutes before the hosts levelled on 27 minutes in Chisinau. Marc Janko netted six minutes after the restart as Austria went on to register a slightly fortunate win.

Xherdan Shaqiri was again on the losing side in Switzerland’s second qualifier. Switzerland followed the 1-0 defeat in the opening match against England with another reverse by the same margin against Slovenia. Shaqiri, like Alaba, played the full 90 minutes but was unable to make a decisive impression on the game. The former FC Köln player Milivoje Novakovic converted a penalty on 79 minutes to seal the 1-0 victory in Maribor.

No debut for Bernat - Benatia wins

Juan Bernat was in the Spain squad for the first time but he did not get a run-out for the Iberians. He had to look on from the bench as his team-mates suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat in Slovakia. Juraj Kucka (17) put the hosts ahead before Paco Alcácer scored an equaliser for the reigning European champions on 82 minutes. Miroslav Stoch found the back of the Spanish net with three minutes to play to secure the three points.

As the top two teams in each group and the best third-placed team qualify directly and the other eight teams finishing third are involved in play-offs for the remaining four places all the Bayern international players are still in with a very good chance of making it through to the finals in France.

Medhi Benatia was on the winning side in a friendly playing for Morocco in Marrakech. The North Africans ran out 4-0 winners against the Central African Republic with a hat-trick from Aberazzak Hamedallah (34, 41, 67) and a strike by Omar El Kaddouri (57).
