Bernat earns first call-up for Spain

Bayern’s left-sided utility man Juan Bernat has received his first senior international call-up for Spain. Coach Vicente del Bosque has named the 21-year-old in his squad for the Euro 2016 qualifying double-header away to Slovakia on 9 October and in Luxembourg three days later. “I’m delighted for him because he’s played very well in the last three or four matches,” commented Pep Guardiola on Friday, “it’s great news for him and for Bayern.” Bernat, who signed for FCB from FC Valencia in the summer, has featured in all ten of Bayern’s competitive fixtures so far this term.

Robben returns for Dutch

Bernat’s team-mate Arjen Robben will also be away from Munich for the duration of the next international break as the winger has been named as expected in the Netherlands squad for qualifiers against Kazakhstan on 10 October and away to Iceland on 13 October. Robben missed his country’s 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic in their opening Euro 2016 eliminator due to injury.
