FC Bayern presents gift to Pope Francis

Vatican City, Wednesday 22 October 2014: At the present time, FC Bayern München officials and members of the playing and coaching staff are visiting Pope Francis in Rome. The head of the Catholic Church is holding a private audience in the Vatican with a delegation from Germany’s most successful football club headed by president Karl Hopfner and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Club captains Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer and coach Pep Guardiola presented Pope Francis with an original FC Bayern München shirt signed by all the players.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge then presented FC Bayern’s special “gift” for their host: “In the coming year our team will contest a friendly match. Out of the revenues from this, we will place €1 million at the disposal of the Holy Father for charitable purposes. Pope Francis may then himself decide how these funds should be used, to spontaneously help people in need wherever they are in the world and regardless of their faith.”
