Reaction to Roma v Bayern

‘An evening to enjoy’

Bravissimo! Bayern stunningly posted the biggest away win in their European competition history in Rome on Tuesday night and are now in an almost unassailable position in the race for a berth in the Champions League knockout stages. “Leading 5-0 at half-time in Rome is just incredible!” an almost disbelieving Arjen Robben said after the 7-1 triumph in the Eternal City. Thomas Müller reckoned the secret to success was simple: “We knew exactly what we had to do.” Coach Pep Guardiola praised his men: “We made good decisions.”

Reaction to Roma v Bayern

Pep Guardiola:”Roma always play well, but we were very aggressive, we made good decisions and we opened up the space we needed. But there are still things we can do better. We’re visiting the Vatican on Wednesday and we’re looking forward to it. I’m curious.”

Thomas Müller: ”It was obviously an excellent first half from us. We were aggressive up front, we kept it tight at the back and made the most of the space available. The coach prepared us very well, showing us exactly where Roma’s weaknesses lay, and that’s how it all came about. We knew exactly what we had to do, and obviously we also have superb individual class up front with the ability to combine to perfection. That was the key tonight. We’re totally satisfied.”

Arjen Robben: ”Huge credit to the team, and the coaching staff who set us up so well. Leading 5-0 at half-time in Rome is just incredible! It’s an evening you simply have to enjoy because it was a superb performance. But we have to keep both feet on the ground. It’s still early in the season. It may sound a little dumb, but there are still areas where we can improve.”

Daniele de Rossi (AS Roma): “We have to learn the lessons from this defeat. We were so looking forward to the match, and that includes the whole city. I’m gutted for the fans. They were still getting behind us even after the final whistle. It hurts, because they’re magnificent and deserved better than that.”
