Xherdan Shaqiri fired a brace on Saturday evening to help put Switzerland’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign back on track, the FCB forward scoring his side’s third and fourth goals in a 4-0 home win over Lithuania. A second victory in their fourth qualifier sees the Swiss up to second spot in Group E, level on points with Slovenia and the Lithuanians. England comfortably lead the section on the maximum 12 points.
The home team controlled proceedings in St Gallen, but more than an hour had been played before the long overdue opener when Josip Drmic hit the target after 66 minutes. Fabian Schär (68) and Shaqiri – first with an 80th-minute header, then with a cunning last-minute back-heel – ensured the final score accurately reflected the balance of play.
Bernat on the bench
Juan Bernat spent the whole of Spain’s 3-0 victory over Belarus in Huelva watching from the subs’ bench. Isco (18), Sergio Busquets (19) and Pedro (55) sealed a routine victory for the dominant European championship holders. In the Group C standings, the Spanish are level with Ukraine in second place on nine points, three off surprise leaders Slovakia.
