Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Thomas Müller and Mario Götze have been called up to the Germany squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar in Nuremberg on 14 November and a friendly against Spain in Vigo on 18 November, national team coach Joachim Löw announced on Friday.
The FCB quartet will be joined in Berlin on Monday by Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger, where all Germany’s World Cup winners will receive the Silver Laurel Leaf, the country’s highest award for achievement in the world of sport, from Federal President Joachim Gauck. The ceremony at 14:00 / 2 pm CET will also be attended by Chancellor Angela Merkel, Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière and German FA (DFB) President Wolfgang Niersbach. World Cup movie “Die Mannschaft” (The Team) premieres in the evening, before the players begin preparations for the Gibraltar clash the following day.
“We’ll approach the match against Gibraltar with full concentration and seriousness,” Löw said. “Obviously, we know we’re overwhelming favourites, and that’s how we intend to play.” The coach is also looking forward to the meeting with Spain, who are likely to include Juan Bernat in their squad: “Spain have dominated world football in recent years. We’re looking forward to testing ourselves against these magnificent players.”
