Neuer pulls out of Spain clash

Manuel Neuer has withdrawn from the Germany squad to face Spain in Vigo in Tuesday’s final international of the calendar year. The world’s best keeper left the Germany team hotel in Nuremberg on Saturday after complaining of pain in his right knee. “I’d like to have fielded my best team against Spain, but we didn’t want to risk anything with Manuel,” commented Germany coach Joachim Löw. Roman Weidenfeller and Ron-Robert Zieler are standing by to deputise.

Beckenbauer launches student competition

Müller in potent form

Thomas Müller struck his fifth brace for Germany in Friday’s 4-0 victory over Gibraltar and is now up to 26 goals for his country. The Bayern striker is Germany’s top scorer in the current Euro 2016 qualifying competition with four of a total of seven goals in four matches. Müller is likely to finish the calendar year as Germany’s top scorer in the 12-month period: with only Tuesday’s friendly against Spain to go, the Bavarian-born goal-getter has ten goals to his name, three ahead of FCB team-mate Mario Götze on seven.
