FC Bayern went through to the DFB Cup quarter-finals after a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over SV Darmstadt 98. Xabi Alonso wrapped up the victory with a stunning goal 40 minutes into the last home match before the winter break. “Darmstadt didn't have one real scoring chance over 90 minutes, and that's why it was a deserved win,” skipper Philipp Lahm summarised after the final whistle.
Reaction to Bayern v Darmstadt
Pep Guardiola: “I'm very proud of my lads, we've played with 13, 14 players recently. I'm very satisfied. The first half was very good, particularly the first few minutes. It's not easy when your opponents drop so deep with all their players. It's a great honour to be the coach of these players. I hope the injured players return after the winter break.”
Philipp Lahm: “We only failed to make it two early on. We have to blame ourselves for that. Darmstadt didn't have one real scoring chance over 90 minutes, and that's why it was a deserved win.”
Dirk Schuster (SV Darmstadt coach): “We're sad that we're out. In total I'm very proud of my players and the account they gave of themselves here. We allowed relatively few chances over the full 90 minutes, defended very well and gave Bayern a hard fight.”
Aytac Sulu (SV Darmstadt captain): “We turned in a very good display and defended very well. Credit to the whole team, we fought passionately and lost due to a long-range shot. We can build on that performance.”
