A charity initiative organised by the European Club Association (ECA) has raised €1.3 million for a good cause. The sum will be donated to Save the Children and UNICEF to help refugee children.

"As major players in society we cannot ignore the dramatic scenes which currently affect the lives of so many children," commented Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who has the same position with the ECA. For this reason the leading clubs' interest group started a fundraising campaign: each of the 80 teams in the Champions League and the Europa League donated one Euro per ticket sold for the first home match of matches in European competition this season.

"We're proud that the European clubs took part in the fundraising campaign, and we're delighted that we can donate the proceeds to Save the Children and UNICEF. Both organisations are tirelessly working to support desperate refugee children and their families in Europe," Rummenigge continued.

The donation provided by the ECA will enable Save the Children and UNICEF to intensify their refugee aid programs. Funds will be used to support initiatives throughout Europe. A wide range of concrete measures includes the provision of winter-proof clothing and blankets, the arrangement of rooms suitable for children, the establishment of educational and leisure time activities, and the provision of food.
