Costa & Co upbeat despite bitter chill

A typically bitter winter chill has descended on Munich, and Bayern’s first training session since the squad’s return from sunny Doha duly took place in temperatures hovering just above freezing. However, spirits were still upbeat and the mood was good. “Servus! How are you? I’m very well thank you!” Douglas Costa informed one of the support staff in perfect German, before the bobble-hatted and gloved Brazilian trotted out onto the practice ground.

The squad then set to work with gusto. Following a thorough warm-up in the performance center Pep Guardiola led his men out onto the pitch and divided them into two groups: half the squad worked on tactical exercises, with the other half busy on rondo possession drills. The programme also included shooting practice. The groups later changed places. Mario Götze, Franck Ribéry and Mehdi Benatia, who are working their way back after injury, put in a few laps of the facility.

On Friday Philipp Lahm, Thomas Müller & Co will again train at the Säbener Strasse in a closed session prior to Saturday’s friendly away to Karlsruher SC (kick-off 15:30, live on Sat.1, highlights on Sven Ulreich will miss the dress rehearsal for the Bundesliga restart trip to Hamburg a week on Friday: the backup keeper stretched a syndesmosis ligament in the last scheduled workout in Doha and cannot train for the time being.
