What a weekend for Germany! Numerous German sports personalities celebrated major international triumphs on Saturday and Sunday. At the same time as Bayern took on Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, the German handball national team became European champions by beating two-time world champions Spain 24-17. It is the team’s greatest success since the 2007 world cup title.
“Hats off! @DHB_Teams Congratulations on the European championship title! Madness! RESPECT! What a performance,” Mario Götze twittered. Many of his team-mates joined in: “EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS AWESOME! Congratulations guys,” wrote Jérôme Boateng.
But that was not the only reason to celebrate. On Saturday Angelique Kerber won the Australian Open, which makes her the first German woman to clinch a major title since Steffi Graf 17 years ago. Felix Loch won his fifth world luge championship title in Königsee. Natalie Geisenberger won the women's world luge championship. Viktoria Rebensburg won the giant slalom in alpine skiing in Maribor.
Warm congratulations from FC Bayern!
