On Friday Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller played as if there had been no EURO 2016 or summer break after the last league match in May. Lewandowski posted a three-goal haul, Müller provided three assists in the Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen, a 6-0 victory.

"If we play well and win and I score goals it couldn't go better for me," a delighted Lewandowski commented after the impressive start. He had already played a major role for Bayern last season, scoring 30 goals and clinching the top scorer trophy. "Robert Lewandowski is a fantastic striker," Carlo Ancelotti said after the final whistle.

Before Lewandowski, only one Bayern player has scored three goals on Matchday 1: Gerd Müller in the 1969/70 and 1972/73 seasons. Lewandowski took 12 shots on goal, more than any other player on Friday, taking his 2016 tally to 25 goals in 28 competitive fixtures.

Personal record for Müller

"The whole team played very well. But we know what we have to improve," commented the Poland international, who latched onto Müller's pinpoint cross to score his second goal shortly after the break. Müller set up three goals, more than in any other Bundesliga match.

It is only in terms of scoring that he has "definitely had luckier days," Müller commented with a grin. A goal refused to come for the 26-year-old, who loosed off six shots, but was denied by the woodwork and Bremen players every time. "That's football," added the Germany international, who scored 20 goals last season, setting a personal best and finishing third in the scorer rankings. There is plenty of time left for Müller to surpass that mark in the current season.
