Bibs for jerseys

"What are they wearing?" That was the question on the Bayern fans' lips back on 27 October 2001 as they watched their team run out for the away game against Köln. The home team wore their traditional red shirts - but the FCB kit staff had forgotten to pack the club's away strip and the reigning champions were obliged to improvise. Then president Uli Hoeneß personally snipped the sleeves off the players' white warm-up bibs and the stars pulled the modified garments over their normal jerseys - job done.

The men from Munich were clearly not deterred by their 'new' one-off kit as they won the match 2-0. The outfit particularly suited Claudio Pizarro (picured with Köln's Carsten Cullmann), who scored both goals. The Peruvian is currently on the books with the Billy Goats and could face his former club at the weekend, as Bayern are the visitors in Cologne -- but will in all likelihood wear their normal colours this time round.

In our regular "Looking back" series, fcbayern.com republishes quirky, unusual or simply fascinating images from the club's photo archive.
