The world of football and FC Bayern mourn the loss of Lennart Johansson. The Swedish Football Association announced the former UEFA president passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89 after a short illness.
"Lennart Johansson was a visionary as president of UEFA. He was an important trailblazer in modern football and he introduced the UEFA Champions League," said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of FC Bayern München, "I take my bow to Lennart Johansson who was always a serious, reliable and close contemporary and we also always worked together in great confidence. The thoughts of the whole of FC Bayern are with his family and friends."
Johansson was UEFA president from 1990 to 2007. During his time in charge, the Champions League was introduced and developed into one of the biggest football competitions in the world. In 2001, it was Johansson who presented the trophy to FC Bayern after the unforgettable Champions League triumph in Milan against Valencia.
