Bayern will be without Bastian Schweinsteiger in Wednesday night’s DFB Cup quarter-final clash away to Bayer Leverkusen. “He won’t play, definitely not,” Pep Guardiola confirmed at Tuesday lunchtime’s press conference. Schweinsteiger sustained an ankle injury in Saturday’s Bundesliga meeting with Dortmund and although the damage is not serious, the midfielder will not regain match fitness in time for the trip to the Rhineland.

Schweinsteiger joins an injury roster also bearing the names of Arjen Robben (torn stomach muscle), Franck Ribéry (ankle), David Alaba (ruptured knee ligaments), Javi Martínez (sports rehab after cruciate damage) and Tom Starke (ligaments). On the plus side, Holger Badstuber has shaken off a sprain and could return to the team. “I think he’s able to help us again,” said Guardiola, who insisted the injury situation “cannot be used as an excuse. It’s a big challenge for us.”
