Final farewell for one of the greats

The magic moment in Tuesday’s meeting between Bayern and a Germany XI, a match held in tribute to Oliver Kahn, came when veteran referee Markus Merk whistled for a substitution on 75 minutes. The Allianz Arena lights were dimmed, star tenor Paul Potts sang ‘A Time to Say Goodbye’, and one of the greatest goalkeepers the world has ever seen said a final farewell to his adoring Munich public.

With the Bayern and Germany players forming a guard of honour, the long-serving club captain took the stadium microphone to thank the crowd and hail “one of the greatest, most emotional moments in my long career.”
