Fourteen-time DFB Cup winners Bayern remain on course for a treble trophy haul this term, after battling through to the domestic cup final with a dramatic extra-time victory over Schalke on Wednesday night.
The 61,673 full house at the Veltins Arena saw Munich boss the first half and create much the better of the chances, but Arjen Robben was unable to convert the clearest of the lot as Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer raced from goal to deny the Dutch dribbler. The Bavarians weathered a spell of Schalke pressure after the restart and regained the initiative following the introduction of Franck Ribery midway through the second period, but the deadlock held until the end and the match moved into extra-time.
The clock showed 112 minutes when Robben produced a moment of magic to fire his side into the lead, and ultimately to their 18th appearance at the showcase occasion in Berlin, where FCB meet old foes Werder Bremen on 15 May.
