João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo was born 27 May 1994 in Barreiro, Portugal, near the capital Lisbon. In 2008 he joined the renowned youth academy of Benfica via his youth club Barreirense. On 10 May 2014, he made his professional debut at the age of 19 in a 2-1 defeat by Porto. He joined Valencia on loan in summer 2014 before a permanent transfer. He went on loan to Inter Milan in the 2017/18 season, making 26 appearances in Serie A before signing permenantly for Juventus in the summer of 2018.

In 2019, the Portugal international moved on to Manchester City, where he played under ex-Bayern coach Pep Guardiola. Before his departure to Bayern Munich in January 2023, he scored five goals and made 11 assists in 98 Premier League games and was named in the team of the season on two consecutive occasions.
